Bread and Cup

“Yeezus”
Communion

"Bread and Cup; Yeezus Communion" is a unique piece of mine that blends elements of religious symbolism with pop culture references. The top box, made with oak, is designed to carry bread or crackers. While the bottom box, mahogony, carries wine or grape juice, and cups. While this is much like a traditional communion set, what sets it apart is its playful nod to Kanye West's "Yeezus" persona, which has been compared to the image of Jesus Christ. Although some may view this piece as sacrilegious, I instead aimed to explore the intersection of contemporary culture and faith in a thought-provoking and inclusive way. Ultimately, "Bread and Cup; Yeezus Communion" challenges our preconceptions of what is sacred and invites us to engage with Christianity in a more dynamic and relevant, modern way.

The "Bread and Cup; Yeezus Communion" art piece was originally created as a project for a 3D graphic design class in the fall of 2022. As part of the project, we as students were tasked with selecting a musical artist and designing a piece that they could potentially sell on tour or as a limited edition collectible. I was drawn to Kanye West's persona and his controversial "Yeezus" album, along with his less contraversial “Sunday Service” sets, which explores themes of religion and identity in Christ. By creating a communion set that blends traditional religious symbolism with modern pop culture references, I aimed to challenge the viewer's perception of what is sacred and provoke thought about the ways in which we engage with faith in contemporary society.
